Blowout Preventer Cradle Simulation

OBJECTIVE

Produce a model for the current cradle for blowout preventer (BOP) on a specific oil rig, and run simulations to ensure its safety.

DESCRIPTION

  • The beams are W6X25 and 96" long reinforced with 3/8" plates. The plates holding the BOP 1.5" thick. 

  • The simulations were tested at 6000 lbf on the bottom edge of the cradle to simulate the weight of the BOP. 

RESULTS

  • The cradle withstood the  applied load. The maximum stress is 6.074E3 psi and is located top edge of the slots for hooking the cradles. This gives the current cradle a safety factor of 8.395, so the existing cradle is safe for use.
