Blowout Preventer Cradle Simulation
OBJECTIVE
Produce a model for the current cradle for blowout preventer (BOP) on a specific oil rig, and run simulations to ensure its safety.
DESCRIPTION

The beams are W6X25 and 96" long reinforced with 3/8" plates. The plates holding the BOP 1.5" thick.

The simulations were tested at 6000 lbf on the bottom edge of the cradle to simulate the weight of the BOP.
RESULTS

The cradle withstood the applied load. The maximum stress is 6.074E3 psi and is located top edge of the slots for hooking the cradles. This gives the current cradle a safety factor of 8.395, so the existing cradle is safe for use.
